PACIFIC DAMPWOOD TERMITES

About Us

Introduction

Pacific Dampwood Termites eat wood. They are found in damp or rotting wood. Wood touching the soil has a high risk of infestation. Occasionally dry wood can be attacked when the termites are able to draw enough water from adjoining damp areas.

Pacific Dampwood Termite Damage to Wood.
The wood is quite "clean", not filled with dirt as is done by Western Subterranean Termites.

Dampwood worker termites are seen when infested wood is broken open. They are large 1.3 to 1.9 cm (1/2 to 3/4 inches) long and creamy white in colour. They hollow out wood and leave behind small, box-like fecal pellets.

Male and female reproductive Dampwood Termites have 1 inch long, brown bodies with 4 long, light-brown wings. They fly from the nest during warm evenings in late summer to mate and start new colonies.

Prevention

Good building practices (refer to the Building Code) are important to prevent Dampwood Termite problems. Keep wood dry and correct moisture problems as soon as they develop.

Control

Control of Dampwood Termites requires removing heavily infested wood and correcting moisture problems.

We do not usually recommend the use of pesticides to control these pests. Once the wood is dry the termites will die.

We provide professional integrated pest management (IPM) services, a high-tech form of pest control. We are called professional pest managers, not exterminators or fumigators.  We provide pest management, not extermination or fumigation. Excluding pests before they cause a pest offence is a good example of IPM at work.
