Introduction
Raccoons will quite
happily live in the attics and crawl spaces of structures. They
sometimes cause a great deal of damage when they enlarge openings to get
into buildings and pull down and trample insulation. The noises they
make and odours they cause can be very annoying.
Raccoons mate in January and February and their young are born in
late April to early May. A raccoon can have up to seven babies but
litters of four young are more common. Babies remain in their dens until
they are about 10 weeks old and then will go out to forage with their
mothers. The young separate from their mothers when they are about a
year old. They live to be about 10 to 12 years old.
Control
Raccoon control should be limited to excluding them from buildings.
Sometimes on-way doors can be installed over raccoon accesses to allow
the animals to leave, but not re-enter, a building. If necessary they
may be live-trapped and held in the traps for a few hours while their
entrances to the building are sealed. Excluding them from buildings
should not be performed when there is any danger of trapping young
inside buildings.

A Large Live Trap for Trapping Raccoons
|
We recommend against trapping and relocating raccoons. Almost all
relocated raccoons die.
We sell one-way doors and live-traps. We can advise you on what you
can do.
